{"id":561,"date":"2022-01-25T01:26:04","date_gmt":"2022-01-25T01:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kansas-shl.org\/?page_id=561"},"modified":"2022-01-25T01:30:11","modified_gmt":"2022-01-25T01:30:11","slug":"3905-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.kansas-shl.org\/index.php\/resolutions\/39th-session-resolutions\/3905-2\/","title":{"rendered":"3905"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A RESOLUTION urging the Legislature of the State of Kansas to support 2021 Senate Bill No. 76, or<br>similar legislation, during the 2022 regular session to provide property tax relief for certain<br>senior citizens and allow these individuals to maintain their standard of living amidst<br>continually rising property taxes.<br><br>WHEREAS, Many senior citizens live on fixed incomes, a significant portion of which go to<br>property tax payments, which as a direct result diminishes their purchasing power; and<br><br>WHEREAS, Every time property taxes increase, many senior citizens are forced to make<br>difficult lifestyle choices related to budgeting for food, clothing and healthcare, among others; and<br><br>WHEREAS, In the 2021 regular session of the Kansas Legislature, Senate Bill No. 76, which<br>aimed to establish the Golden Years Homestead Property Tax Freeze Act, was considered by a<br>legislative committee but was not passed; and<br><br>WHEREAS, The Golden Years Homestead Property Tax Freeze Act would provide property tax<br>refunds based on increased property tax assessments paid on qualifying residential homestead property<br>equivalent to the amount of property tax increase over a base year to eligible persons 65 years of age or<br>older or disabled veterans, as defined by the act, who own their homestead and whose household<br>income is $50,000 or less; and<br><br>WHEREAS, The Golden Years Homestead Property Tax Freeze Act property tax refunds would<br>be paid by the State of Kansas and would not reduce the amount of property tax revenue received by<br>local units of government; and<br><br>WHEREAS, Freezing property taxes for qualifying senior citizens would allow these<br>individuals to adequately plan and budget while living on fixed incomes; and<br><br>WHEREAS, Providing property tax relief would allow more senior citizens to afford to live in<br>their homes, which would be of greater benefit to society: Now, therefore,<br><br>Be it resolved by the Silver Haired Legislature of the State of Kansas: That we urge the<br>Legislature of the State of Kansas to support 2021 Senate Bill No. 76, or similar legislation, to provide<br>property tax relief for qualifying senior citizens, as continually increasing property taxes adversely<br>affect senior citizens, many of whom are unable to afford increased taxes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A RESOLUTION urging the Legislature of the State of Kansas to support 2021 Senate Bill No. 76, orsimilar legislation, during the 2022 regular session to provide property tax relief for certainsenior citizens and allow these individuals to maintain their standard of living amidstcontinually rising property taxes.
