  1. Kansas Advocates for Better Care (KABC) in Lawrence wrote a bill that we have presented to the Legislature repeatedly, without success. Did you know that Assisted Living residents in Kansas’ over 400 facilities have no legal rights and no legal protection? They are being evicted without cause, in violation of contracts and state regulations. Kansas has an Appeals Court but it is just for nursing home residents. Assisted Living residents are not allowed to file an appeal. State Regulations are not enforced, and residents have no recourse, so facility owners know they can break the law and never be held accountable. (State law says statutes and regulations will be strictly enforced. They are not.)
Alzheimers patients suffer from Transfer Trauma which can be fatal. That’s what happened to my husband. We found a facility that guaranteed full care til end of life so we would never have to move again. He was half way throught their 4 levels of care when he and 5 other Alzheimer’s residents were abruptly evicted. He died 9 days later. That was in 2011. The facility suffered no consequences and continues in business to this day. This goes on all over the state, with full approval of the Legislature. We need your help.
